Who are you really?

That’s the question you’re probably asking of me right now. I’ll see what I can do to oblige.

I’m a writer. That’s the first thing you should know about me. I’ve been writing since I could pick up a pencil. The earliest story I wrote was about dinosaurs who robbed a bank. I’ve gotten a touch more sophisticated since then, though I’m still in the crime genre.

For the last seventeen years I’ve been trying to break into the publishing business as an author. I’ve written nine novels over that period, five of which were just awful and will never see the light of day. Of the remaining four, one has been sold to British publisher Serpent’s Tail and will appear (tentatively) in January 2011. As for the others… we shall see.

In the meanwhile, I continue to write primarily crime fiction set largely in Mexico and the American Southwest. I feel like I have a good historical novel in me, but its time is not yet. Right now it’s guns and ne’er-do-wells.

Equally important to my role as an author is my role as a husband and father. My wife goes by the initials MJ on the blog and my son is referred to as Nemo. I do this to protect their privacy, largely due to a terrible stalking incident a couple of years ago. I’ve been blogging advisedly ever since, particularly since these entries go out under my own name, and you’ll find there’s not much revealed here about my comings and goings. I prefer to keep that under wraps.

I will tell you that Nemo suffers from Asperger Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder for which there is no cure and little treatment. This makes him an extremely special child to his mother and me. You’ll note the link to Autism Speaks in the sidebar. That’s there because of Nemo and the many, many children like him. I urge you to make a donation.

And that’s pretty much me in a nutshell. You’ll doubtless come to learn more about me and MJ and Nemo as I blog moving forward, but for now you have all the information you need. See you next time.
